Michael,

Years ago the lunettes were diry as they would have been at the time of the battle. But my last two visits 2003,2006 they look like this. Does the park ever kill the weeds on them anymore?

thanks

You know, Charlie, I wondered about the exact same thing when I posted this photo. I don't see why it should be so difficult to keep them trimmed and free of alot of the debris that grows up in them.

I even considered contacting them about doing an adopt a lunette type thing on ECH. Just give me a weed-whacker and get out of the way. Ha !

5 minutes with 'Roundup' and that would take care of it for the summer. It would look so much better and I am sure that most visitors would get a better sense of what the defenses were like. Not just a bunch of weads in front of cannons that they probably do not realize there are defenses in front of them. If I lived there I think I would make it my project and contribution. But knowing the government I sure that would have a problem with someone doing that.

Great Job on the site Mike!

Thanks, Charlie,

The park is sometimes a little squirrely about these things. I once attempted to enter the adopt a position program that they run. I wanted something a little more interesting than dropping grass seed around a monument on Hancock Avenue so I requested the Timber's farm site. At that time it was still out in the woods and the foundation terribly overgrown with vegetation. My proposal was simply to try and keep the rocks free of growth and visible to those few who may have wished to find it. After months of awaiting a reply, they give me a NO based on the fact that the site was to fragile or some such wording, I don't recall exactly anymore. Amazingly enough when the tree clearing in that area opened up the foundation again, I go out there and find a big old tree carcass plopped directly onto this "fragile" relic ! That's when I turned to other volunteer opportunities. Ha!

Safe travels,

Mike
